The Housing crisis comments from the founder and outgoing Chair of the Jersey Homes Trust

Jan 12, 2022

The Progress Party fully endorses the comments made by Mr Van Neste, the founder of the Jersey Homes Trust, that in regards to providing new affordable homes, ‘the government has sleep walked into a crisis that is seriously affecting young families‘ and that ‘our local population has as much right to an affordable home as they have to proper health and education services.

Leader Senator Steve Pallett says that ‘we in Progress will commit to bringing Government owned sites forward more quickly to deliver more affordable rental and first time buyer homes to give our young islanders the hope that they have a future in Jersey.

Mr Van Neste is right when he says that failing to provide an adequate number of affordable homes is a failure of government.

I believe that the time is right for party politics

I believe that the time is right for party politics - that is to say, to have groups of politicians who declare, as a constituted group, what their policies and values are and stick to delivering them. A manifesto should therefore mean something and identify what that...

Eliot Lincoln – So why did I get involved in party politics?

I'm not sure I can say anything else that hasn't already been said about Gary Burgess. What a truly inspirational person and someone who will be sorely missed in Jersey and further afield. It is with great sadness (as well as keen interest) that I read Gary's piece...

So when is a crisis not a crisis?

I have been watching the debate around housing rage on for the last few weeks with interest. There seems to be intense debate around exactly what we call the situation we find ourselves in. Crisis? Very challenging situation? Hoo-ha cooked up by the Left? No, it's...

Something feels different right now

When I first took on the role of Vice President of Jersey’s Chamber of Commerce, the then President, Kristina Le Feuvre and I visited the Jersey Archive - a fantastic asset and one I suggest you visit if you never have - and looked through some old material -...

Jersey | Mental Health Facilities | Unacceptable delays

Jersey in the middle of a mental-health crisis and the delay  is putting pressure on facilities which were already at breaking point and ‘not fit for purpose’. Health Minister Richard Renouf recently revealed that the facility was not expected to be completed until 9...

The Progress Party does not support the Overdale Hospital project

The Progress Party  returning enough successful Candidates in the 2022 General Election will overturn the decision to build the General Hospital at Overdale. Our policy, which is published in full here, will be to refurbish and/or build  (where necessary) a new...

Weakness of the States Assembly

Reflections The weaknesses [we have found] in the function and structure of the States are in our opinion serious. It is the weakness of a national assembly, the members of which are so divided amongst themselves that they have difficulty in arriving at and...

Outdoor sport does not resume for over 18

Rather than today’s press release from government that states ‘outdoor sport resumes for under 18’s’ being received positively, it merely highlights the discriminatory and unfair attitude Ministers are showing to all sports people. The continued prohibition of over...
